Amidst the lush green landscapes of the Dooars region, Chamurchi is a hidden treasure in the Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal. Located close to the Bhutan border, this quaint village remains largely unexplored by mainstream tourists, making it an ideal getaway for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and those looking for an authentic rural experience. With stunning natural beauty, serene landscapes, and cultural significance, Chamurchi is a destination worth discovering.
Chamurchi offers a peaceful retreat amidst the breathtaking landscapes of North Bengal. Unlike the more commercialized tourist spots in the Dooars, this village provides an offbeat experience with its pristine nature, mesmerizing river valleys, and proximity to the Bhutan border. If you are someone who enjoys trekking, exploring caves, or simply soaking in the raw beauty of the mountains and forests, Chamurchi should be on your travel list.
One of the most fascinating attractions of Chamurchi is the Mahakal Cave, a sacred site dedicated to Lord Shiva. The trek to this mystical cave begins at the Diana riverbed, where travelers park their vehicles before embarking on a scenic 3-kilometer walk through the riverbed towards the base of the hill. From there, a short but steep uphill climb leads to the cave entrance.
Inside, the cave is adorned with naturally occurring stalactite and stalagmite formations, which resemble Shiva Lingam structures. The cave is narrow, slippery, and has an eerie yet spiritual aura. Devotees and adventure seekers flock to the site, especially during the Shivaratri festival, when thousands of pilgrims visit the cave temple to seek blessings.
Chamurchi shares a border with Samchi (also spelled Samtse) in Bhutan, separated by the historic Bhutan Gate. This gate is one of the 18 traditional entry points that once allowed the Bhutanese to trade with the plains of India. In fact, these ‘Dwars’ (gates) are what gave the region its name – Dooars.
Indian tourists can easily cross the border to explore Samchi, where they can visit the Samtse Monastery, a peaceful Buddhist retreat known for its serene ambiance and stunning architecture. The market in Samchi is also a great place to shop for Bhutanese handicrafts, traditional clothes, and local produce.
Chamurchi is well-connected by road. Travelers driving through the Dooars region via National Highway 31 need to take a detour at Banarhat to reach Chamurchi. An alternative route is available on the east side of the Diana River bridge, which is slightly shorter.
Chamurchi is surrounded by several other beautiful destinations in the Dooars region that can be explored as part of your trip.
Jaldapara National Park (60 km) – Home to the famous one-horned rhinoceros.
Gorumara National Park (55 km) – Known for its wildlife safaris and elephant sightings.
