The name Dawaipani means medicinal water. There are multiple Dawaipani sources in the hills some of which are hot water springs. The popular Dawaipani village near Darjeeling gets its name from the nearby spring in the river nearby. This pristine hamlet is situated at an altitude of over 6000 feet. It is located about 20 kilometres from Darjeeling town surrounded by Himalayan forests and one can witness the splendid view of Kanchenjunga and Darjeeling town can also be seen from here.
Getting There
From NJP, the nearest rail station, Dawaipani is about 75 km. From Bagdogra airport, the distance is 78 km. You can reach here either through NH 10 (Bengal - Sikkim Highway) or NH 110 (Siliguri – Darjeeling highway).
If you are following the NH10 route, you have to come to Teesta bazaar and then take uphill Peshok road to reach a road crossing close to the 6th Mile crossing. If you are coming via the NH110 route, then you have to come to Peshok road from Jorebungalow and reach the same road crossing.
From the road crossing, you have to move North for a few kilometres to reach the village of Dawaipani.
To See
This offbeat destination offers you a magnificent view of Mount Kanchenjunga and Sandruptse Monastery. The famous tourist spot Lamahatta is near and one can visit this place quite easily as it takes around half an hour from Dawaipani.
As this hamlet is quite near to Darjeeling town which is an hour's drive makes it possible for the tourists to do the Darjeeling sightseeing as well. They can see the famous Tiger Hill, Ghoom Monastery, Batasia Loop and Rock Gardens. A toy train ride can also be enjoyed along with visiting the Mall area for shopping.

Dawaipani offers various activities for passionate travellers and adventure lovers which include trekking and hiking. This is a great place for bird lovers and photography as different species of birds of the Himalayas are found over here. One can also enjoy the farming of organic fruits and vegetables.
