Sittong is a cluster of villages within a large area known as Sittong Khasmahal. It is located in the Kurseong subdivision of the Darjeeling district in the Northern part of Bengal. Sittong is ideal for nature walks. Just walking through the village and enjoying the unspoiled beauty of nature is something that a traveller must not miss. A walk towards the Riyang river is also quite interesting. The river is flowing through the valley in the backdrop of the mountain range. This is a beautiful sight indeed.
The old Buddhist monastery in Upper Sittong is another place that should not be missed. The monastery is situated amidst nature and it offers a mesmerizing view of the surroundings which include the snow-capped Kanchenjunga range.
The Sittong Church is also a place to visit. Nestled in the lap of the mountain the place offers a majestic view of the valley and the mountains.
Ahaldara viewpoint is a nearby place. It can be easily visited by sittong. This point offers a panoramic view of the Kanchenjunga range and the Teesta river flowing in the middle of the valley. It is considered one of the best viewpoints of North Bengal.
Mungpoo is around 8 km from sittong. It is famous for the beautifully built Tagore House, where the Noble laureate Rabindranath Tagore stayed. Tagore House is extremely well maintained and a must-visit place here.
Getting There
Sittong is close to the main airport Bagdogra and the rail station of NJP. The drive to Sittong village from the Airport or the rail station is about 2 hours duration and the distance is about 60 to 65 km.
Best time to visit
This little paradise could be visited throughout the year. The orange orchards are in full bloom in winter so people who wish to enjoy orange cultivation at their best must try it in winter. Summer here is cool and comfortable. The weather is crystal clear and the view is splendid.
