Darjeeling: The Queen of the Hills

Darjeeling is one of the oldest and most popular hill stations in India. The grand view of the Kanchenjunga massif, the UNESCO World Heritage Toy Train, some of the best tea gardens in the world, rejuvenating walking trails, mesmerizing sunrise from Tiger Hill, the warmth of the local people, their unique culture, thrilling treks, and adventure activities — Darjeeling is an experience as rich and aromatic as the famous tea it produces.

Orientation

Darjeeling town, with a population of about 1,70,000 and an elevation of approximately 2,100 meters, is located on a ridge with houses hugging the hillsides.

The National Highway 110, popularly known as the Hill Cart Road, connects the plains of Bengal with the town. As the road enters Darjeeling’s main area, you will first reach the Darjeeling Railway Station. A road branching off to the right leads to Chowrasta, also known as the Mall—a vibrant promenade lined with shops, cafés, and bookstores. Below the Mall lies Chauk Bazaar, the main local marketplace. A road from Chowrasta leads north toward attractions like the Governor’s House, Gymkhana Club, Gorkha Rangmanch, Darjeeling Zoo, and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute.

Chowrasta and Around

The Darjeeling Chowrasta, or Mall, is the heart of the town. This open space, dotted with vintage cafés, bookstores, antique shops, and rows of seating areas, is perfect for relaxation. Vehicles are prohibited here, making it ideal for peaceful strolls. Young tourists can enjoy pony rides led by local handlers.

Just north of Chowrasta lies Observatory Hill, home to the highly revered Mahakal Temple. Regardless of religious inclination, the temple offers breathtaking views of Kanchenjunga.

Darjeeling Himalayan Railway

A visit to Darjeeling is incomplete without a ride on the famous Toy Train. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) covers 80 km between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling.

Most visitors opt for the Joy Ride from Darjeeling Railway Station, which takes them to Ghoom via Batasia Loop—a spectacular spiral track with a panoramic view of Darjeeling town and Kanchenjunga. The War Memorial at Batasia Loop, dedicated to Gorkha soldiers, adds to its charm. Some joy rides feature century-old steam engines, while others use modern diesel locomotives.

Tiger Hill

Standing at 2,590 meters, Tiger Hill is famous for its breathtaking sunrise views of Kanchenjunga, Mt. Everest, and other eastern Himalayan peaks. The best time to visit is early morning when the first rays of the sun illuminate the peaks in hues of orange and gold.

Tourist vehicles depart for Tiger Hill before dawn, and on clear days, the sight is nothing short of magical. The return journey often includes stops at Batasia Loop and Ghoom Monastery before reaching Darjeeling in time for breakfast. Adventurous visitors can hike back through Senchal Forest for an immersive experience in nature.

Ghoom Monastery

Also known as Yogachoeling Gompa, Ghoom Monastery houses a revered statue of Maitreya Buddha (the future Buddha). Located about 10 km from Darjeeling, it is a significant stop for tourists visiting Tiger Hill and Batasia Loop.

Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park

Located 2 km from town, this zoo is renowned for its conservation efforts, including the breeding of snow leopards and red pandas. It also houses a rare collection of high-altitude animals, including the elusive Siberian tiger.

Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI)

HMI is a premier mountaineering institute where legendary mountaineers like Tenzing Norgay trained. It features a museum showcasing mountaineering gear, Himalayan flora and fauna, and historic Everest expedition artefacts.

Lloyd Botanical Garden

Located below the Darjeeling bus stand, this garden boasts an extensive collection of Himalayan plants, flowers, and orchids, making it a haven for botany enthusiasts and nature lovers.
