Mangpu of Rabindranatha Tagore

Mangpu is a serene hill station in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal, best known for its association with Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. Nestled at an altitude of about 3,700 feet, this picturesque retreat is surrounded by lush green cinchona plantations and orange orchards. If you are looking for an offbeat travel experience away from the crowds of Darjeeling, Mangpu offers the perfect escape. With pleasant weather all year round and easy access to nearby attractions like Sittong, Shelphu, and Labda, Mangpu serves as an excellent base for exploring the region.

The Legacy of Rabindranath Tagore in Mangpu

Mangpu’s most cherished treasure is its connection to Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. The great poet visited this quiet hamlet multiple times, seeking inspiration and solace in its tranquil surroundings. His primary residence in Mangpu was the house of his protégé, Maitreyi Devi. Today, this house has been preserved as Rabindra Bhavan, a museum showcasing Tagore’s photographs, manuscripts, and personal artifacts. This is a must-visit for literature lovers and those who appreciate history and culture.

Another historic landmark is the British bungalow in Surel, about 3 km from Mangpu market. This is where Tagore first stayed in 1938 and wrote his famous poem Camellia. Though the bungalow is in ruins today, it remains an important piece of Bengal’s literary heritage.

Mangpu's Cinchona Plantations and Orange Orchards

Mangpu was once the hub of cinchona plantations, vital for the production of quinine, a medicine used to treat malaria. While the plantations are no longer as well-maintained, they still offer scenic walking trails for nature lovers.

The region is also famous for its orange orchards, particularly in nearby villages such as Sittong, Shelphu, Reshop, and Labda. If you visit during winter, you will be treated to the sight of trees laden with ripe, juicy oranges – a visual and culinary delight.
