Charkhole: Offbeat Kalimpong

Nestled at an altitude of approximately 5,500 feet, Charkhole is an untouched paradise in the Kalimpong district of West Bengal. If you're looking for a peaceful retreat away from the touristy chaos, this offbeat village offers everything you need—an uninterrupted view of the Kanchenjunga range, dense forests teeming with rare bird species, and the raw beauty of the Himalayas. Located just 27 km from Kalimpong town, Charkhole is a place where nature lovers, birdwatchers, and solitude seekers find their bliss.

The Best View of Kanchenjunga

Charkhole is one of the few places in North Bengal that offers a panoramic, unobstructed view of Mount Kanchenjunga. On a clear day, the towering snow-clad peaks dominate the skyline, creating a picture-perfect backdrop for your mountain getaway. The experience of watching the first rays of the sun kiss the Kanchenjunga peaks from Charkhole is something that remains etched in memory for a lifetime.

A Haven for Nature Lovers and Birdwatchers

Surrounded by dense forests of pine, oak, cypress, and shal trees, Charkhole is an ecological hotspot. The adjacent Pemling forest, which extends towards Loleygaon and Pabong, is home to diverse wildlife and rare butterflies. The region is also a paradise for birdwatchers. You can spot several Himalayan bird species, including the Chestnut-tailed Minla, Green-backed Tit, Lemon-rumped Warbler, and Hodgson's Treecreeper. Whether you're an avid ornithologist or just someone who enjoys the sounds of birds chirping in the wild, Charkhole will not disappoint.

Walking Trails and Village Exploration

Charkhole is not about checklist tourism; it's about immersing yourself in nature. There are no commercial sightseeing spots here because the entire village is the attraction. Nature walks through misty forests, exploring the rustic beauty of the village and interacting with the friendly locals are some of the most rewarding experiences you can have here. The serenity of Charkhole, combined with its untouched beauty, makes it an ideal destination for slow travelers who wish to escape the digital world and reconnect with nature.

Nearby Places to Explore

If you wish to explore beyond Charkhole, several beautiful locations are just a short drive away. Loleygaon, another quaint village, is just half an hour away and is famous for its Jhandi Dara sunrise viewpoint. The Loleygaon Canopy Walk, a hanging bridge amidst dense forests, is another exciting attraction. Pabong, a neighboring village, is almost an extension of Charkhole, separated by a stretch of forest. The two villages are so close that you can reach Pabong on foot in just 15 minutes.

Essential Travel Tips for Visitors

Being a rural destination, Charkhole lacks commercial establishments and large marketplaces. Travelers are advised to carry essentials such as medicines and necessary supplies before arriving. The remoteness of the area adds to its charm, but it also means that you should be well-prepared for a completely offbeat experience.

How to Reach

Getting to Charkhole is part of the adventure. There are two main routes, and the best one depends on where you're coming from.

If you're traveling from the NJP railway station or Bagdogra airport, the most convenient route is via Dooars. This route covers about 70 km and passes through Bagrakot before taking a winding uphill road to Charkhole via Chuikhim. The journey consists of approximately 45 km of plains followed by a 25 km mountain drive.

Alternatively, if you’re coming from Kalimpong, Darjeeling, or Sikkim, you can take the route via Kalimpong town. From NJP, this route is around 75 km. The journey involves driving through hilly terrain to Kalimpong, then heading towards Relli Khola. After crossing Relli Khola, you’ll reach a bifurcation—take the right turn, and within 30 minutes, you’ll arrive at Charkhole.

Best Time to Visit Charkhole

Charkhole is a year-round destination. Its moderate altitude ensures pleasant weather in all seasons. Summers are cool and refreshing, while winters are chilly but never extreme. The monsoon brings heavy rainfall, adding to the lush greenery of the forest, though landslides may occasionally disrupt travel. If you’re visiting for the best mountain views, October to March is ideal as the skies remain mostly clear during these months.
