Pedong is a charming little village nestled in the Eastern Himalayas, just 20 km from Kalimpong. Tucked away on a ridge and surrounded by lush pine forests, this serene destination offers a perfect blend of history, adventure, and breathtaking landscapes. Once a key transit point on the ancient Silk Route connecting Tibet to India via Jelep La Pass, Pedong is now a paradise for nature lovers, history buffs, and offbeat travelers.
Getting to Pedong is an adventure in itself. From Kalimpong, drive towards Lava and take a left turn at Algarah. The scenic road leads straight to Pedong, rewarding travelers with stunning mountain views along the way. For those coming from Siliguri or NJP Railway Station, the journey takes about 3-4 hours by car. You can hire a private cab or take a shared vehicle to Kalimpong and then transfer to Pedong. You can also book an exclusive vehicle from our transport division, Humro Cars, by calling 9733062020. If you are coming from the Lava side, you do not have to go to the Algarah junction. There is a bypass to Algarah that you should take; there have been sightings of Royal Bengal Tiger on this road in recent years. The upcoming destination of Mairungaon is also on this bypass road.
Nearest Airport: Bagdogra Airport (95 km)
Nearest Railway Station: New Jalpaiguri (NJP) (85 km)
A short hike from Pedong takes you to Damsang Fort, an important historical site where the Lepchas and Bhutias fought long battles. Built in the late 17th century, the fort was later destroyed by the British in 1864. While the ruins remain, the real attraction is the panoramic view from the fort's location.
Pedong has its own Tinchuley Hill, not to be confused with the more popular Tinchuley near Darjeeling. A short 900-meter hike brings you to the viewpoint, where you can witness breathtaking landscapes, including the Jelep La and Nathula Passes, the rolling green fields of Kashyone village, and the mighty Mt. Kanchenjunga.
Built in 1706, Sangchhen Gumpa is a Bhutanese monastery with a deep historical connection. After the destruction of Damsang Fort, all its valuable antiques were preserved here. The monastery still hosts the Chaam Dance during the Raninavami festival, attracting visitors from Bhutan and nearby regions.
If you’re planning to explore the famous Silk Route Trail in Zuluk, East Sikkim, Pedong makes an excellent stopover. The permit office for Zuluk is located in Rangli, about a 1.5-hour drive from Pedong. Travelers can stay here before heading towards the iconic Zuluk zig-zag roads and Nathang Valley.
Rikisum (Reesoom): A hilltop viewpoint near Algarah offering an unobstructed view of Kanchenjunga. An old British bungalow built in 1902 once stood here, though now in ruins.
Sillery Gaon: A quiet village just a short walk from Damsang Fort, known for its mesmerizing Kanchenjunga views and pine forests.
Rishikhola: Located 15 km downhill from Pedong, this picturesque river spot serves as a natural border between Bengal and Sikkim. The place is perfect for camping, fishing, and river picnicking.
Lava & Rishyap: These two popular destinations, just 30-45 minutes from Pedong, offer a more immersive Himalayan experience with thick forests, serene monasteries, and trekking trails.
